The Tempest & Minimalism

Often when one thinks of Shakespeargon one is reminded of royal families, dramatic firebrand fights or battles, and lavish stage costumes. However, in The storm we are removed from the intricate visual resource that typically accompanies plays. Shakespeare has remaining us with something akin to a blank canvas, filling our apprehension with exclusively sounds and verbalized emotion from his characters. While this lack of decimal point can often be a frustration for readers, Shakespeare has crafted The Tempest in such a way that we are to the full submerged in the hearts of those such as Prospero, Miranda, and Ferdinand. The minimal art of the primed(p)ting combined with the strength of the characters voices provides us with a more intimate look into the situation. A majority of the play is set on an island. However, we are not given many exposit of the island and, therefore, are not distracted by the imagery of a tropical oasis or a barren desert. The island is zipper but a plot of soil. We get a apprize outline of a corner of the islands geography when Ariel tells Prospero where she has left the kings son and the rest of the men (Act I, look II), but nothing more is said about the land. Rather, the focusing is shifted from the environment around the characters to the emotions within.

Although we are left without any delightful details, the imagery is not missed, either. The lack of setting information forces us to focus on the internal details of the characters. Before the turn turn of a page, we are caught up with decades of Prosperos and Mirandas history; all this without any form of visual imagery to set the stage.
