Short Story Analysis

In William Faulkner’s novel A Rose for Emily, the of import image Emily and her surroundings ar observed by many narrator. The story is narrated by what the narrator sees, hears, and feels. On the contrary, in Edgar Allan Poe’s novel The Black computerized tomography, the narrator is the main character himself. Therefore, the lector can see the situation through the main character’s eyes. Emily from A Rose for Emily and the narrator from The Black Cat share similarities in homicidal tendencies, besides the differing narrations give the stories young characteristics, setting the mood.
Both Emily and the narrator from The Black Cat are similar because they occupy mental abnormalities. They both possess homicidal tendencies. The narrator of The Black Cat murders three members of his family: Pluto, wife, and the black cat. He just kills them simply because they annoy him. They don’t annoyance him that much, but he cannot stand them at the moment. Emily kills her lover kor Barron, a man whom she considered marrying. She wants to stay with him forever in life, but she cannot have. Thus, she resolves to murder him and keeps his corpse in her bed. Their actions imply that these two characters have serious mental disorders. The narrator seems to have angry outbursts that place impulsively. He does melancholy one murder.



However, he doesn’t regret killing his wife or the black cat. His reaction subsequently murdering his wife and the black cat is psychopathic because he does not feel scared and sad for committing these horrible acts but instead is proud of hiding the corpse of his wife perfectly. Emily also seems to have a mental disorder called Schizoid Personality disquiet which is a condition characterized by “excessive detachment from kind relationships and a restricted range of expression of emotions in social settings.” (Schizoid Personality Disorder.)
