The story of Frankenstein can easily be compared to the Greek myth of Prometheus. Mary Shelley actually subtitled her novel “The Modern Prometheus” because of the Promethean ideas she uses as the primer coat of her story. “According to the Greeks, Prometheus stole excitation from the gods.” (Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus). This quote is world-shaking for the fact that Prometheus stole unload from the gods to require man and to create tools for serviceman breakment. The monster in Frankenstein can be compared to the human race in the story of Prometheus. In Frankenstein, Victor seeks to improve the cognition of science by creating a super being, in other words the monster. The symbol of fire is what ties these two stories together. It represents knowledge and creation. Prometheus wanted to better human life but knew fire was the key to advancing the human race, which led him to stealing fire from the gods. He was forced to steal it because Zeus was afraid of the consequences it could cultivate by giving them fire. Prometheus was ultimately caught and punished for it. His punishment was to forever and a day be tortured by bird to eat his coloured every day.
In Frankenstein, Victor was also punished for trying to advance in knowledge after creating the monster. The punishment for his actions was the deaths of race close to him. In both stories, someone tampered with what was not vatic to be tampered with. Prometheus was told specifically by Zeus to not hold up humans fire and Victor interfered with God’s force out to create life, which led to both of their demises. This is why Shelley referred to her novel as “The Modern Prometheus” making the stories and their ideas very similar and comparable.
